Late April frosts reaching −7.8 °C have damaged an estimated 38 % of primary buds in South Moravia, particularly in the Mikulov and Velké Pavlovice sub-regions. Traditional sekt producers, many of whom rely on early-ripening Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, report losses up to 70 %. Several wineries have already begun purchasing Austrian and German base wine to maintain production volumes, raising concerns about future “Moravian” labelling integrity under EU rules.
